Yaroslav I the Wise and Vladimir II Monomakh
Saint Vladimir the Great, Grand Prince of Kiev from 960 to 1015, is considered the father of the Rurik dynasty. His son, Yaroslav I the Wise, ruled from 978 to 1054 and is known for his legal reforms and promotion of literacy. Vladimir II Monomakh, a descendant of Yaroslav I, was Grand Prince of Kiev from 1113 to 1125 and is known for his military prowess and code of laws.
The Gagarins and the Starodub Princes
The Gagarins are a princely family descended from Vladimir the Great. They ruled over the region of Briansk in western Russia. The Starodub Princes are another branch of the Rurik dynasty that descended from Yaroslav I. They ruled over the city of Starodub in southwestern Russia.
Yuri Gagarin, the First Man in Space
Yuri Gagarin, the first man to travel into space, was a descendant of both the Gagarins and the Starodub Princes. He was born in 1934 and became a fighter pilot in the Soviet Air Force. In 1961, he was selected for the Vostok 1 mission, which made him the first human to orbit the Earth.
