Governor Takes Precautionary Measures to Ensure Public Safety and Preparedness

Funds Released from Response and Recovery Fund to Support Response Efforts

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders has declared a state of emergency on Friday, October 13, 2023, ahead of the total solar eclipse scheduled to occur on Monday, April 8, 2024. In a press release, the governor stated that the declaration will allow the state to release funds from the Response and Recovery Fund to assist with response efforts.

"We are taking this precautionary measure to ensure the safety and well-being of all Arkansans," said Governor Sanders. "The solar eclipse is a rare and beautiful event, but we must also be prepared for the potential challenges it may bring."

Governor Sanders released $100,000 from the Response and Recovery Fund to assist state agencies with their response efforts. The funds will be used to cover costs associated with traffic management, public safety, and other emergency services.

The total solar eclipse on April 8, 2024, is expected to be visible in a narrow path across the United States, from Mexico to Canada. Arkansas will be one of the states in the path of totality, where the moon will completely block the sun for several minutes.

State officials are encouraging residents and visitors to plan ahead for the eclipse and to take precautions to ensure their safety. More information about the eclipse and safety tips can be found on the Arkansas Department of Emergency Management's website at adem.arkansas.gov.
